Hold Onto your Dreams

December 30, 2016

My dream when I was young was that by age 30 my knight in shining armor would find, romance and whisk me away and we would marry and have a couple of wonderful, pretty kids. Then by age 40, we would have the careers we wanted and by age 50, we would retire and enjoy our life traveling around Europe. But...unfortunately life happened. I was actually a widow at age 30, by 40 I had just changed careers and by 50 I was still working for a company with no idea if I could ever retire.

Some of my dreams were fantasies and I admit that, but just because my plans didn't happen when and how I wanted them to doesn't mean I've stopped dreaming. I still want to see Europe and though I never had any children, I kinda think of this blog as my child, because I'm sharing my thoughts. There are times when the dream takes on another meaning than the one I thought.

"Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly." ~ Langston Hughes

Even the Bible says the people perish for lack of vision (Proverbs 29:18). God knows we need to have something to work towards... something that will keep us inspired and hopeful.

But if you had a dream that didn't come true, don't lose hope. I always wanted to be an artist from a little girl. I used to draw comics and write poetry but my mother pushed me to study business rather than art. Still, the creative spirit never left me and though it took a lot of years, I was able to change my career to graphic design. It was a lot of work because I was self-taught but it was worth it to get to this point in my life.

Many famous people have said they knew what they wanted to do when they were kids and they pursued it. I so admire that and wish I had done that too. I might actually have become a pro golfer! But, the point is, don't give up on your dreams even if time is against you. Set a goal and go after it. I would rather try and miss then not do anything and live with regret for never trying at all. I'm sure you feel the same.

  1. Beautiful post! It's never too late sissy! We just have to look at what we think our dreams look like today through God's eyes. "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might be rich. 2 Corinthians 8:9
