Lavender and All Its Great Uses

Tuesday, January 31, 2017

My favorite flower had always been red roses and I still admire and love them, but I have a new favorite and that's lavender. I love everything about it, the scent, the color, and appearance. And lavender isn't just a pretty flower, it's an herb and a healer too.

I wanted to find out its other uses as a fragrance and as an oil:

  • As an essential oil, it's excellent for aching muscles, relaxation, and stress relief. Add 6-8 drops Lavender essential oil after running the water and vigorously agitate water. Add the drops to a capful of milk or Epsom salts and then put in the bath as this helps to disperse the oils through out the water. This is a great way to receive the benefits of Lavender oil. ~source: Netherfield
I can attest to using it for muscle aches because I have back issues from time to time and it has helped me. I also burn lavender in my candle warmer and the scent is soothing and calming.

As a healer:
  • Put a drop of Lavender oil on a bee sting or insect bite to stop itching reduce swelling. Put 2-3 drops Lavender oil on a minor burn to decrease pain. ~source: Mindbodygreen.com

Other uses I found are:
  • Dry, chapped, or sunburned skin. Rub a drop of lavender oil on chapped or sunburned lips.
  • A few drops rubbed into the scalp can help prevent dandruff.
  • It can even help allievate hayfever and cold sores.
What a versatile flower lavender is. Read the above linked articles for more specifics of using lavender. I'm certainly not an expert on essential oils and herbs and I always recommend seeing your doctor before trying any treatment.

I've been using herbs in my cooking for a few years and I like treating myself with them rather than pills. Especially since I deal with anxiety and stress, I like being able to use natural products to treat it.
