We Need More Love

Over this holiday season, I noticed something disturbing. Last week, hubby and I were shopping for pillows when all of a sudden this young girl breaks in between us to grab herself a pillow. I was stunned because she startled me. I turned around to see her grandmother, she looked like she could be her grandmother, but anyways she was standing there staring at me with this smirk on her face. No "excuse my granddaughter", no apologies, nothing. I didn't return her facial expression with a smile. I was angry and offended, but I let it go and walked away.

The next day I was grocery shopping in the frozen foods section looking for something when an older lady about runs over me to grab a bag of something or other without saying one word to me. It took all my strength not to say out loud, "did you not learn any manners?!" Rather, I just stared at her as she walked off. The look on my face probably could've killed somebody. What has happened to people? Is proper etiquette the exception now rather than the norm? Why would the holidays bring out the worse in people?

Showing love should not be rare. It doesn't cost anything to show kindness, mercy, and genuine concern. I like to watch soccer on my iPad and I just love to see when a team scores how all their teammates hug each other. It always brings me to tears. In fact, I think arms were created just for hugging!

And, I understand that people go through all kinds of struggles. I may have caught that lady on a bad day so trying to let these things go is important so that I don't bring home anger. I just think it's a shame that organizations have to create marketing campaigns to teach people how to be kind to each other. It's a trait that's supposed to be learned at home.

Social media is another outlet for meanness. I've read stories about cyber bullying and YouTube is filled with ugly comments that are downright unnecessary and plain rude. My mom always had one saying: "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Christ takes it one better, don't even think wrongly. Instead say a prayer for the person. Kindness is shown that way as well. The important thing is not to return rudeness with rudeness.

I didn't handle either situation 100% correctly, cause even though I didn't open my mouth, my thoughts were not right. Sometimes, situations catch us off guard cause we're not expecting it so I have to pray to God to govern my actions every day. It's more paramount now than ever. I don't want to look in the mirror and be ashamed of myself. If no one shows me love, it won't stop me from trying to show love back. It is the 1st and greatest commandment. It was why Jesus came. And, it is why He's still working on me.
